Pope Francis in Critical Condition: Signs of Kidney Failure Amid Pneumonia Battle π₯π¨ Pope Francis is currently in critical condition with mild signs of kidney failure, according to the Vatican.
The 88-year-old pontiff, hospitalized for over a week now, is fighting pneumonia in both lungs but remains vigilant and well-oriented. Blood tests reveal mild renal failure, which is under control for now.
Despite his critical state, the Pope continues to receive oxygen and even participated in the Holy Mass from his hospital apartment. His condition, however, requires a reserved prognosis due to the complexity of his clinical picture.
Earlier reports indicated that Pope Francis experienced a respiratory crisis, necessitating high flows of oxygen. The Pope’s history of respiratory infections, including a severe bout of pneumonia in his youth and a recent bronchitis hospitalization, complicates his current health situation.
Additionally, he has had two falls in recent months, further challenging his recovery.
Doctors emphasize that while his kidney damage shows up as mild renal failure, it's crucial to monitor closely. Kidney damage in elderly patients can worsen quickly, especially when pneumonia leads to sepsis. Yet, the Vatican assures that his condition is being carefully managed.
Despite the grim outlook, Pope Francis continues to engage in his duties, including phone calls and decision-making from the hospital.
Only his closest collaborators have visited him, with Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni noting his undiminished sense of humor.
This marks the second-longest hospitalization since his election as Pope, and the Vatican has called for “complete rest” as he battles these serious health challenges.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Pope Francis during this difficult time. π️
